The Dairy Barn
The Dairy Barn is a simple, serene little thatched cottage, perfectly placed for enjoying both Sussex’s beautiful countryside and coast, including the glorious sandy dunes of West Wittering beach.
Set in the grounds of a 17th Century farmhouse (The Farmhouse is also listed here), The Dairy Barn has its own area of private garden, complete with dining table and BBQ for enjoying meals alfresco – but also has access to the two acres of gardens that surround the main house. Enjoy exploring the orchard, vegetable patch and pond in your own little slice of rural heaven.
The tiny hamlet of Almodington is a perfect base for exploring the area. The beaches of West Wittering are just two miles away (beach towels, buckets and spades are thoughtfully provided!), Chichester is just six miles and Goodwood just beyond – so whether you’re in Sussex for a quiet, countryside or seaside break or for the thrill of the Festival of Speed, it’s all on your doorstep.
There are two delightful bedrooms, both of which have a king sized bed and ample wardrobe space.
(Please note that The Dairy Barn is configured such that you have to walk through one of the bedrooms to get to the bathroom, or go via the outside and in through another external door – this might not suit everyone!)

Lots of views from the windows of the charming garden, which includes an orchard, pond and vegetable patch. The area of garden for exclusive use of the Dairy Barn isn’t enclosed, but is private and can’t be overlooked from the main house.
Plenty of car parking space along the main driveway
Children are welcome, and a highchair and travel cot can be arranged on request.
Well-behaved dogs are welcome – we just ask that they are kept off the furniture please!
Chichester is about a ten minute drive away, and also offers the nearest station, with trains taking approximately an hour and 40 minutes to London. Goodwood is about 8 miles from the Dairy Barn, so this is a great base for visiting any of their many events throughout the year, or making the most of the health club, golf course, or restaurants.
Things to do
Spend a relaxing morning enjoying a coffee and a wander in the garden, enjoying the sights and sounds of this peaceful little spot, as well as evenings under the stars.
When you’re ready to explore more of the area, the huge variety of coastal activities are probably a good place to start. West Wittering is famous for its miles of golden sand and glorious dunes, dotted with beach huts. It does get busy in the summer, but there is always plenty of space just at the end of the car park, at unspoilt East Head. There is also a paddleboarding and kite surfing school at one end of the beach, which offers both lessons and equipment hire.
East Wittering has a pebble beach that is popular with surfers, and some laid-back, surf-style cafes. Chichester Harbour is home to a sailing club and marina, and is also a great place for a walk. Pagham Harbour Nature Reserve is a sheltered inlet that hosts some important wetland wildlife – and is very much undeveloped. Bosham is stunning and also popular with sailors, as well as with children who love crabbing from the quay, and an ice cream on the green. Most of the coast is accessible by bike from The Dairy Barn, so bring your bikes and make the most of the sea air.
For more cultural pursuits, Chichester has a museum dedicated to the town’s Roman history, the Novium Museum, the world-renowned Chichester Festival Theatre, and the Pallant House Gallery, home to some of the country’s best modern art – and worth a visit for the stunning architecture alone.
The Goodwood Estate has a year-round programme of events and hosts everything from the Glorious Goodwood race meeting to retro-themed Revival, a celebration of classic cars and a feast for the eyes!
Food & Drink
There are plenty of spots to enjoy lunch or a drink overlooking the water, all within easy reach. The Crown & Anchor at Dell Quay is a particular favourite, with a huge outside terrace where you can watch the boats, paddle boarders and kayakers. The Boat House Café at Chichester harbour serves everything from breakfast to supper in a cool modern setting and with great views of the marina. Billy’s on the Beach, at Bracklesham, has a fun beachside, surf vibe.
Only slightly inland, the Crab & Lobster at Sidlesham is a local favourite and well-known for its seafood. The Lamb Inn, at West Wittering is popular with families and has a lovely garden, as does the Old House at Home, at East Wittering.
Chichester has a range of independent cafes and restaurants – try Luckes for healthy breakfast & lunch with a twist, or the stunning courtyard at the Pallant House Gallery which is home to Pallant Café. They often host events there too. Farmer Butcher Chef is the dining jewel of the Goodwood Estate – they specialise in using only produce from their own Home Farm.
