Description

The Thatched Cottage at West Wittering is a beautiful home, in the most idyllic location – just a stone’s throw from a lesser known section of beach in the famous Witterings. The owners have seamlessly blended traditional and modern, to create a light, bright home that is brimming with character. A well-crafted, modern extension with high ceilings and exposed timbers adjoins a picture-book perfect cottage, complete with thatched roof.

The interior has been furnished and styled with every thought for relaxation and comfort – an armchair with a reading lamp thoughtfully placed nearby, a side table just the right height for your cup of tea or glass of wine. The throws and cushions are cosy, the kitchen well equipped, and the bathrooms spacious and numerous. The whole mood is calm and serene. Open the full length windows in the sitting room and let the sunshine and sea air stream in.

The location is perfectly peaceful – the large garden backs onto beautiful countryside, yet a short minute stroll brings you to the most glorious Wittering beach, with miles of beautiful sand dunes, backed by beach huts and flanked by the National Trust East Head. You won’t be troubled by the vagaries of the English summer here – when the sun comes out just grab your beach towel and you can be there in 5 minutes!

Location

The village of West Wittering sits a short distance inland, and is a sleepy, picturesque spot with a lovely church – but the beach here is most people’s destination thanks to its clean water, unspoilt scenery, and wildlife. There are views of Chichester Harbour, the Isle of Wight, and the South Downs. The setting of The Thatched Cottage at West Wittering means you really don’t need a car to enjoy a wonderful holiday here.

If you do crave more activity, Chichester is just three miles away, so easily on hand for cultural pursuits, shopping and dining. Chichester Harbour, itself an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and offering a range of activities throughout the year, is closer still.

The Goodwood Estate is easily accessible from here (about a 20 minute drive), with events taking place throughout the season.

Things to do

Families may need nothing more than a bucket and spade to enjoy their break. The beach at West Wittering is beautiful, safe (there are lifeguards on duty during the summer season), and close enough to home to make it easy to retire to comfort when the fun gets too much or the weather changes. National Trust East Head is the quieter end, and offers wonderful walks and nature-spotting. For thrill-seekers, there is plenty to do on the water too. It is an ideal place to learn or practice your surfing, SUPing, windsurfing or kite-surfing, and there is a school on hand, at one end of the beach, that can offer training and hire equipment.

Walking is plentiful, with routes around beautiful East Head, or further afield to Chichester Harbour and beyond. The South Downs Way is nearby, for the more dedicated hikers (or mountain bikers).

Chichester is a small city, but one that has a lot to offer. There is culture in the form of the Festival Theatre, a beautiful cathedral, Pallant House modern art gallery, and Roman museum, but there is also shopping, a regular farmers market, and a wealth of places to eat and drink. Or make a trip to see some outstanding horse-racing at the Glorious Goodwood festival, or some outstanding vintage cars at Revival, held every year at the Goodwood Motor Circuit.

Food and Drink

Of course when you’re this close to the sea, beachside dining & drinking is a must – and you’ll be spoilt for choice in this area. Billy’s on the Beach, at nearby Bracklesham Bay, has a relaxed beach bar vibe and is open for everything from breakfast, to lunch, to coffee and cakes. The Boat House at Chichester Harbour is great for watching the sailors coming and going. The Anchor Bleu in the tiny village of Bosham is a beautiful old pub with views over the harbour – but be careful where you park! The tides can be deceiving and have caught some drivers out.

Only a short distance away from the shore, but still in Wittering, the Lamb Inn is a lovely traditional pub that prides itself on offering local ingredients, and has pretty garden with a play area – great for families.

Reviews

What can I say about this incredibly charming cottage. I’ve stayed at The Thatched Cottage at West Wittering many times and it is top of my list for a place to stay and visit the area. The minute you walk in the door you know you were meant to be there. Everything updated to a very high standard without taking away that wonderful cottage atmosphere you want. Comfortable beds and sofas to sink into. The fabulous doors in the main sitting room open right up and you walk out into a well loved English country garden inclusive of a pond. A five minute walk down Berry Lane brings you to the ocean where you can enjoy the beach and swimming. The village shop and pubs are close by. Truly my favourite place to go to when I’m in England.

Amazing stay at The Thatched Cottage at West Wittering! Fab location a short stroll from a beautiful stretch of beach and a lovely garden that catches the sun perfectly on a summer evening! Fantastic communication with Cabins and Castles – great service!

This place is the very essence of idyllic. Think the movie The Holiday combined with a huge great room expansion with all the modern amenities. Just a moment down the road from the sea and a quick walk to the local pub. Great place to call home away from home for a while. Book and book often to relax and unwind.

What a joy it was staying at The Thatched Cottage at West Wittering. The location is out of this world and the cottage spacious, light and airy. We had a truly wonderful time. We didn’t want to leave ! Thank you so much.

The Thatched Cottage at West Wittering is gorgeous. It is the perfect hide away for a trip to the seaside. We love that it is only a stones throw away from the beach for dipping our toes in the sea, long walks, picnics and of course, crabbing!

The cottage itself has the best of everything and manages to weave its magic of tranquility from the moment you step through the door. It is a highly practical and well thought out cottage offering all one needs for a really good holiday.

I absolutely loved my stay at the cottage, I was so surprised at how beautiful it was for the price, it’s perfect for a big family or a group holiday or even a couples away weekend. Short walk from the beach, and just the best nights sleep! Thank you for having us and we will be back!

The Thatched Cottage at West Wittering is the perfect cottage from which to enjoy the gorgeous sands of West Wittering or explore the area around Chichester and the Witterings. The cottage is gorgeous and worked both for a weekend away for our family (of 4) and for a second weekend cottage for a group of 6 mums! The kitchen is well equipped with everything we needed and the beautiful central living room had loads of games, books and CDs. The cottage was clean and the beds were perfectly comfortable. There is also a pretty garden which was lovely to chill out in. It is a short 4 mins’ stroll from the beach and the front drive parked 3 cars comfortably.

We have stayed at The Thatched Cottage at West Wittering twice and can recommend it without reservation. This lovely thatched cottage is very comfortable, well equipped and spacious. The delightful garden room/library looks out over the large secluded and beautiful garden with a sunny patio area.

The location is fantastic, being a short walk down a private lane to the quiet part of the main West Wittering beach. A ten minute walk in one direction along the beach takes you to East Wittering where there are a variety of restaurants and shops. The other way is a short walk to the bathing area with Life Guards. The local pub, The Old House at Home, is a five minute walk serving good food.

In summary a perfect location for a family holiday or a long weekend by the seaside.

The Thatched Cottage at West Wittering is beyond idyllic. Elegantly furnished and supremely comfortable with the perfect location for days on the beach and coastal walks. Morning coffee on the sunny patio  of the  beautifully manicured garden was such a treat. The only downside was having to leave. Thank you for a wonderful stay, it’ll always be my ‘happy place’.

Our first visit to The Thatched Cottage at West Wittering brought a wonderful holiday for all of us, a beautiful cottage with grand space, immaculate and clean. Huge garden lounge with bifold doors onto a patio with large and well stocked garden, exceptionally comfortable.
We enjoyed sunbathing in the private garden after a morning on the beach, a short private road (5 mins) directly from the cottage to the beach extending miles in each direction, wide and clean. Often a leisurely morning beach-walk to East Wittering for an outdoor breakfast, a short bus ride back drops off almost outside the cottage. A wide range of hostelries around even a  short walk away.  An evening stroll with our little dogs down to the sea as the sun set took on magical qualities, the whole setting is superb.
We could have happily stayed another week and are already looking to plan another visit to The Thatched Cottage at West Wittering
Many thanks to Becca and Jenni for a lovely stay, not forgetting Zoe from Castle and Cabins.
