Description

The Milkhouse is one of only two cottages available at The Artisan Bakehouse; an award-winning destination in West Sussex that offers baking and other workshops, an event space, and a pop up licensed café (the adjoining Brewhouse cottage can also be found here).

Milkhouse is a beautifully restored, cosy cottage for a couple or young family, that oozes period charm. Exposed beams, a huge fireplace, beautiful neutral tones and a sunny dining conservatory make this an idyllic spot whether for summer or winter. A well-appointed bathroom and small kitchenette complete this peaceful little home from home. A soundproofed adjoining door means that the Milkhouse & Brewhouse can be opened up for larger groups if required.

Outside, the five acres of garden and woodland are begging to be explored. Look out for butterflies, bats and badgers! As well as the fallow deer that like to graze almost right up to your front door. Amble to the vegetable garden, where you are welcome to pick vegetables, herbs or apples in season, or collect eggs from the free range chickens. Families will love the trampoline and swing, and in the summer months there is even a heated pool to enjoy.

The Artisan Bakehouse offers workshops and courses at various times during the year – everything from sourdough to pizza and even chocolate making! Guests at the Milkhouse are offered 10% off courses.

Location

Ashurst is a quiet village in West Sussex, close to the picturesque town of Steyning and just ten minutes’ drive to the coast at Shoreham-by-Sea – whose station offers a direct train to London with a journey time of just an hour. The Artisan Bakehouse and cottages are tucked away along a tree-lined drive, in a wonderfully quiet spot.

Ashurst is just on the edge of the South Downs National Park – so walkers, cyclists and even horseriders can be assured of miles and miles of routes to explore, beautiful scenery and gorgeous unspoilt countryside.

The glorious South Coast is within easy reach – the nearest beaches are just a 10 minute drive, while buzzy Brighton is just 25 minutes from your door. Arundel, Chichester, and the Goodwood Estate are also easily accessible.

Things to do

Of course many visitors will want to try their hand at bread-baking, given the proximity of the Bakehouse with its traditional wood-fired oven. Who can resist the wafting scent of freshly baked bread! They even offer private workshops for parties or events – what better way to celebrate a birthday or other milestone? Others will be happy just to wander around the garden and grounds and take in the peace and quiet.

The more adventurous may like to see the local area from a different perspective – a short walk from the Milkhouse brings you to the Kayak Coach, who can provide canoe hire, training, or guided tours along the nearby River Adur. A nearby equestrian centre means you can also explore the countryside on horseback.

For children, the gardens around the cottage offer freedom and fun with a swing, trampoline and woodland to explore. But there are plenty of family friendly attractions nearby too. Fishers Farm has been a local favourite for years and is a brilliant day out for children up to age 10, or try the slightly more adrenaline fuelled Drusillas Park.

Arundel is a stunning town, dominated by its Castle, and worthy of a visit for the extraordinary ‘Earl’s Garden’ alone (the tulip festival in May is superb). It also boasts a range of wonderful shops, restaurants and galleries and is a great spot for antiquing. Or take a boat ride on the River Arun. Brighton is a must-visit for its historic pier, vibrant beach, and the famous ‘lanes’ for shopping.

Reviews

We had the most beautiful week here, me, my husband and two year old son. The rooms were perfect for a small family. We were lucky enough to visit when the bake house had a pop-up opening and food was absolutely delicious. Hosts were super friendly and gave us great recommendations to make the trip even better. We hope to be back soon!
Fantastic pair of quaint cottages with private heated pool. Brilliant layout for 3 adult couples plus 1 or 2 small children.
Wonderful place! Food superb. Really recommend this gem in the countryside of West Sussex.
What an amazing place, great atmosphere, excellent hosts and fabulous food. Feel I have found a really special place, can’t wait to visit again, thank you.
Thanks so much for a wonderful week, the cottage was great as well as the home cooked meals – we will definitely be back – thanks again, Caroline, Chris & Emilie.
