Description

The Meeting Place is a stylishly converted apartment, in an historic building at the heart of beautiful Petworth. The entrance at street level takes you up to two beautifully furnished bedrooms and a chic shower room on the first floor, and a light, airy beamed open plan living space on the top floor. Enjoy the views of Petworth’s town centre and high street from every window.

The ground floor is home to the owners’ art gallery; so it’s no surprise that there is wonderfully quirky, interesting art to enjoy throughout The Meeting Place. Their eye for colour, texture, and design is also evident from the choice of vintage furniture, reclaimed finds and wonderful textiles – all of which work harmoniously with the building’s original doors, beams and brickwork. Soft, muted colours keep the space feeling fresh, and allow the art and decorative accessories to shine.

Petworth is well known for its burgeoning art scene, and for the Petworth Festival which attracts some incredible music to the town every July. It has some wonderful antiques stores, independent cafés and shops, and is within easy striking distance of the South Downs, Goodwood and the coast.

Features

First Floor

The entrance is at street level, next to the Ottocento Gallery. Steep stairs lead to the first floor, where there are two bedrooms, both with king sized beds, wardrobe and chest of drawers. Views over Petworth’s historic town centre. The shower room is large and beautifully refurbished, with walk in shower.

Second Floor

Another steep staircase takes you up to the living space, which is open plan with soaring ceilings and original beams – flooded with light thanks to windows on two sides, and a large sky light. At one end is a smart kitchen with grey shaker units and an oak worktop – well equipped with cooker, fridge, dishwasher and microwave. A large dining table has room for six, and the living area features a leather antique sofa, and a modern sofa bed, plus 40” smart TV. A range of lamps, side tables, and throws make this space as comfortable and welcoming as it is stylish.

Children: Children welcome, but please note that the staircases in this old building are very steep, and so it may not be suitable for younger children, or anyone with limited mobility. Travel cot & high chair can be provided on request.

Pantry items: The kitchen includes pantry basics, and the owner provides tea, coffee and milk for your arrival.

Pets: No pets

Parking: There is plenty of parking in the main town car park, which is approximately 50m from the apartment door, through a small pedestrian arcade.

Location

Petworth is a thriving, historic market town, in the heart of the South Downs, and just 55 miles from London. The nearest stations are in Pulborough, with trains to London Victoria, and Haslemere, with fast trains to London Waterloo. There is more than enough to keep visitors busy in Petworth for a
weekend, or longer, and all of it just steps from your front door when staying at The Meeting Place – so you don’t necessarily need a car.

If you do want to explore further afield, there are miles of glorious countryside surrounding Petworth in the South Downs National Park. The interesting town of Arundel, and city of Chichester are both just a short drive away, as is the Goodwood Estate with horseracing, motorsport, aerodrome, golf course and more. Beaches can be found at Littlehampton, or the glorious Witterings with its miles of sandy dunes.

Things to do

For a small town, Petworth hugely over-delivers on art, culture, and shopping. No stay in Petworth would be complete without a visit to National Trust Petworth House, whose grand rooms, beautiful gardens and parkland are not to be missed. It also features one of the National Trust’s best collections of paintings – so why not make the gallery there the start of your exploration of Petworth’s burgeoning art scene? You don’t have to travel far as the owners’ gallery, Ottocento, is on the ground floor of your building. Petworth is also home to a summer arts & music festival, and an autumn literary week.

If you enjoy a spot of antiquing, then this could be your perfect destination! Petworth offers over 30 art & antiques dealers within a mile radius, so there is plenty to keep even the most dedicated bargain hunter happy. There are also a wonderful selection of independent interiors stores and boutiques.

Walking and cycling opportunities are numerous in the South Downs, but you don’t necessarily need to travel far – entrance to Petworth Park is free and the 700 acres of Capability Brown designed parkland offer beautiful views across the South Downs, as well as two lakes, woods, and Europe’s largest herd of fallow deer.

Reviews

A delightful period apartment in a lovely town. The apartment had a really well equipped kitchen, a spacious lounge and super comfortable bedrooms. There are lovely shops in the town and great walks in Petworth deer park and only 30 minutes drive to the coast. Recommended for an enjoyable stay.

Had a great stay at Louise’s lovely apartment. The rooms were comfortable, clean and tidy. The living space was cosy with a well equipped kitchen. As well as this the local area has lots of nice pubs and beautiful walks. Would highly recommend a stay here!

A perfectly located house, close to parking and shops, cafes and restaurants. The floor and stairs are slightly uneven but as described and was expected, and personally I found this added to the charm of the building. Petworth is a lovely town, and for me the stay was a success as it made me think about places to move to in the future!
I would definitely visit again, and make better use of the local restaurants without my fussy kids in tow!

What a lovely stay. Home from home for 2 nights.
