The Doghouse

Pulborough, West Sussex | Sleeps 2+1 infant | Bedrooms 1 | Parking: Yes | Wi-Fi: Yes

From £135per night (2 night minimum stay)

Description

As its name may suggest, the Doghouse was a once kennel for the manor house nearby, but after many years and a complete transformation there are no dogs allowed now – only the luckiest of humans will get to spend a night or two in this stunning, quirky space.

The studio is light and airy thanks to huge windows looking out onto a private terrace, lime-washed wood, clever concealed lighting and pale flooring. But this subtle backdrop is brought to life with a joyful and unrestrained palette of colours that may be more reminiscent of a Mexican fiesta; hot pink feature walls, candy-striped curtains, and lustrous blue-green tiles in the walk in shower – it’s impossible not to smile!

Even the white painted antique French armoire contains a delightful surprise; open its doors to find a cleverly concealed kitchen area equipped with all mod cons, and accessorised with more jewel colours.

The Doghouse sits next to the South Downs National Park and within easy reach of Petworth, Arundel, Brighton and events at Goodwood or Cowdray Park. Relax on the sunny terrace – or the more energetic might enjoy a game of tennis on the owner’s court, which is also at guest’s disposal.

Location

The Doghouse is in a quiet, rural location – yet within a short distance from Pulborough station (direct trains from London Victoria taking just over a hour), and just 40 minutes from Gatwick.  Situated just outside the South Downs National Park, The Doghouse offers walkers and cyclists a great base for the South Downs Way (15 minute drive).

There are cultural highlights aplenty in nearby Chichester, Arundel and Guildford, and the many beaches of the South Coast are within easy reach, the closest being Littlehampton.

Things to do

Food & drink:

Arundel is known for having a wonderful diversity of places to east and drink – The Parsons Table offers locally sourced, classic seasonal dishes, while the Burger Shop Co. offers bespoke burgers, craft beers and cocktails. There are any number of excellent local pubs serving great food – try The Horseguards Inn, Tillington, The Swan in Fittleworth and the Black Horse in Amberley. Here you are right in the heart of English sparkling wine country, and will be surrounded by vineyards – so it would be rude not to try the fizz from Upperton. Stopham Vineyard, or the more famous Nyetimber, all of which are made within a mile or two of The Doghouse.

Things to Do:

Enjoy the picturesque countryside – there are miles of walks in all directions. If that’s not active enough for you, there is a tennis court at your disposal within the grounds of the house. Petworth offers fabulous antiquing (famously boasting an antique shop for every day of the year!), as well as the fascinating National Trust Petworth House, with its superb art collection.

Both Arundel and Chichester have a range of shopping, as well as theatres, galleries, and a whole host of cultural events. Polo takes centre stage in nearby Midhurst throughout the summer, at its home, Cowdray Park – culminating in the Gold Cup Final in mid-July. Goodwood draws visitors to events throughout the year, from the Festival of Speed, to Glorious Goodwood and the glamorously retro Revival.
