Description

ÖÖD (meaning, broadly, ‘nightime’ in Estonian) is a cabin concept developed by two brothers, who wanted to create a luxurious way of spending the night out in nature, while treading as lightly on the environment as possible. These stunning cabins are mirrored on two sides, reflecting back their surroundings, and making them near invisible – allowing the occupants (who can see out) perfect privacy but also an uninterrupted view. There are only a handful of them in the UK – and this, we think, has to be the most perfectly placed.
ÖÖD Cabin not only sits by the most idyllic swimming lake, surrounded by ancient woodland – but it is also in the grounds of The Secret Vineyard, an artisan wine producer in the village of Herstmonceux, that makes delicious English wines with sustainability at their heart. The Cabin has a private jetty, hot tub, yoga mats, paddleboard, board games and binoculars. And true to the original concept, the interior is every bit as luxurious as the best hotel room. Beautiful wood cladding throughout makes the space warm and inviting, while a huge, beautifully styled, comfortable bed, wet room with rain shower, and every comfort including Nespresso machine, bathrobes, and locally made toiletries mean stays here definitely feel like the ultimate treat.

Features

The ÖÖD Cabin is a large, 3m x 6m space with floor to ceiling windows (mirrored on the outside for privacy) overlooking the lake and surrounding countryside. The space contains a sleeping area with King size bed, small table and chairs, and a huge wet room complete with rainfall shower. There is a kitchen area with mini fridge, kettle and Nespresso machine, perfect for making a snack or drink. There is a Weber gas barbecue outside, cooking facilities available in a communal space nearby, and plenty of places to eat out in the area.

The Cabin is equipped with air conditioning and heating, and has electric black out blinds – so you won’t be woken by the sunrise!

Outside you’ll find your own private jetty, gravelled area screened by willow panels for privacy, hot tub, BBQ and firepit. There is plenty of space for relaxing, watching the stars, or for drying off after a dip in the lake.

The hosts (and owners of The Secret Vineyard) are able to arrange massages, treatments or (weather dependent) private yoga classes for guests out on the deck.

Beautiful toiletries made in nearby Romney Marsh, local snacks, tea & coffee, as well as wine & beer (additional charge) are all provided. Premium yoga mats & a paddleboard are available.

Location

The ÖÖD Cabin is part of the experience at The Secret Vineyard, itself part of Lime Cross Nursery – a conifer nursery and family business dating back to the 1940s. The whole estate comprises 24 acres, including the nursery, vines, lakes and ancient woodland, and is just outside Herstmonceux, an historic East Sussex village that boasts some wonderful places to visit. It sits between the hills of the High Weald, and the marshy flatlands of the Pevensey Levels. Eastbourne & Hastings are equidistant, both about 30 minutes, and location of the nearest railway stations. The drive from London takes approximately 2.5 hours.

The lake is occasionally used by the owners for swimming in the summer or by a neighbouring Shepherd’s Hut that is also available at the Vineyard – but only at set times. Other than that you will have the lake and surrounds all to yourself, except for the sheep, alpacas, and Zac the horse who you might hear from his stable next door! It’s a deeply peaceful and relaxing spot, with abundant wildlife and clear, starry skies.

Things to do

Since guests here are lucky enough to be staying on a vineyard, it would be remiss not to take part in a tour or tasting! The Vineyard also runs regular wellness days featuring yoga, pilates, mediation and more.

This area around The Secret Vineyard is 1066 country, so there is a wealth of interesting historical sites to visit, including Herstmonceux Castle, beautiful Michelham Priory  with its magnificent gardens, and the restored Stone Cross Windmill. If you’d like to see more of the beautiful Sussex night skies, the nearby Observatory Science Centre (once home to the Royal Greenwich Observatory) is a beautiful Grade II listed building that houses historic telescopes and runs tours and shows.

There are some wonderful walks and cycle trails; the 16 mile Cuckoo Trail follows a disused railway line, so makes for easy cycling, and links Eastbourne to Heathfield. There is a cuckoo hidden in each of the pieces of art that you can spot along the way!

Hastings is watched over by more castle ruins, and has a lively three mile seafront, pier, the famous funicular railway that takes visitors up the steep cliffs to the Hastings Country Park, and a Shipwreck Museum and Aquarium.

Reviews

Helen & Vicky’s place was lovely and peaceful.
Beautiful star gazing at night.
Extremely friendly and responsive hosts when needed.
Great little pub within walking distance.

Really enjoyed our stay at the OOD house that I booked for one night for my husbands 40th birthday.
Beautiful surroundings, so peaceful and quiet! The house itself was spotless and we particularly enjoyed the hot tub, shower and seeing the animals when we woke up!
Walked into the village for some dinner & drinks at the local pub. Would love to return. Helen and Vicky were great hosts, good communication and friendly. Thank you for having us.

Beautiful place to stay x everything was easy and communication was great. Cannot fault this place just wish we had a longer stay

Had a simply amazing stay. Such a beautiful spot, the hot tub was already warm and spent a lot of time between there and the beautiful swimming lake- the sun can out for the following morning and the pond looked incredible . We had some morning guests in the resident sheep and alpacas! Incredible experience and we will be back. Excellent hosts with great communication. Thank you

Magical experience – what a find! Great place to spend the anniversary!
From the beautifully mirrored walls, hot tub, serene lake, wildlife to cosy interior and an amazing shower!

Amazing host, prompt replies, proactive and kind! We will be back for sure x Thanks

Spent a lovely evening and morning at the house. Vicky kindly had the hot tub ready for us on arrival, even though it was lashing down with rain. But both felt very snug inside whilst it rained. Beautiful being so close to nature.

Beautiful and unique stay, set in a private and rural setting.
A great place to relax, while watching all the wildlife.
Definitely worth taking a fresh water swim followed by a hot tub.
And Helen was a great host, helpful with everything.
Highly recommend!
