Description

This luxury, eco-friendly cabin enjoys a unique location on the owners’ 30 acre working equestrian farm – offering glorious, far-reaching views to the South Downs from a private terrace.

The style of this newly built hideaway was carefully chosen to sit quietly in its setting, and the build utilised the best energy efficient methods combined with a range of reclaimed materials, to sit lightly in the environment, too. But it still manages to feel gloriously luxurious – with a large open plan sleeping and living space, that easily accommodates a kitchen area, sofa & seating, and a huge king-sized bed. The large bathroom has a basin and walk-in shower, with a separate loo.

The reclaimed wood cladding that lines the inside of the space, curved to follow the lines of the building, makes this space feel enveloping and inviting, while the beautiful reclaimed marble in the bathroom, carefully chosen furniture and accessories, and luxury White Company bedding all give a boutique hotel feel.

But there aren’t many hotel rooms that can boast a view like this! Make your morning cup of Nespresso coffee, throw open the doors, and retire back to bed to enjoy the peace and quiet and drink in those wide skies and stunning views.

Location

The Cabin is the village of Trotton, in the heart of the South Downs. The nearest towns are Midhurst, 4 miles to the east, and Petersfield, 7 miles to the west – both of which offer a great range of shops, places to eat, and things to do.

The Cabin sits on the owners’ working, 30 acre equestrian farm, which itself it tucked along a quiet country lane; while completely private, the work of the farm will continue around you, and you may see dogs being walked and horses exercised – all of which adds to the charm of this location. There are numerous footpaths and cycling trails that can be joined directly from the farm.

Petersfield has a mainline station and enjoys fast links to London Waterloo, as well as to the coast at Portsmouth Harbour. London is just over an hours’ drive (traffic depending).

Things to do

You are right in the heart of the South Downs National Park here, and with that comes some incredible walking, cycling and riding. The famous South Downs Way takes in open vistas on a 160km route from Winchester to Eastbourne. The Serpent Trail, designed to showcase the unique and varied countryside in the area, is directly accessible from the Cabin.

This historic market town of Petersfield is vibrant and picturesque, and hosts a weekly market as well as festivals through the year. Midhurst is home to the Cowdray Estate, famous for polo. The annual Gold Cup Final attracts thousands of visitors and features live music and pop up shopping – but matches can be enjoyed throughout the season at lawns around the town, just turn up and enjoy the thrill.

The Goodwood Estate is within easy reach, and offers a whole host of events throughout the season from horse racing to motor racing and the unique ‘Revival’ dedicated to cars and fashion from the 40s, 50s and 60s. Petworth is only slightly further afield and demands a visit for Petworth House alone. The coast is easily accessible, with the glorious beaches of West Wittering about a 40 minute drive away.

Food & Drink

Sussex has no shortage of wonderful country pubs, and this area is no exception! The nearest pub from Ellie’s Cabin, the Elsted Inn is just a eight minute walk away. The pub garden at the Three Horseshoes, also in Elsted, boasts some of the finest panoramic views you can find anywhere. The pub can be reached via footpaths directly from the Farm. It would be a leisurely 45min walk. The best news – it’s all downhill on the way home!

Nearby Chichester is well worth a visit for its cathedral, world-class Festival Theatre, galleries and museums – but is also a foodie hot spot, boasting one restaurant for every 154 residents! Try Artie’s Kitchen for tapas with a twist, or the wonderful Farmer, Butcher, Chef on the Goodwood Estate, where the boast is that you will have travelled further than your food (sourced from their own Home Farm).

Sky Park Farm is a working deer farm in nearby West Harting, that has a wonderful farm shop, with butcher, fresh produce, and even a milk vending machine so you can fill your own glass bottles, with milk from a local herd. Durleigh Marsh Farm Shop also has pick-your-own, in season. Madeleine’s Deli has branches in both Petersfield and Midhurst, and you can find some delicious salads, charcuterie, and homemade soups. Their coffee is delicious and can be enjoyed inside, or in the pretty garden (at the Midhurst branch).

Reviews

We had such a lovely, relaxed weekend at Ellie’s Cabin. The barn itself was perfect, with the most amazing views to wake up to. A real countryside experience, great for a little adventure. Josephine was a superb host, I can’t recommend this stay enough!

Ellie’s Cabin is truly a hidden gem. I wanted to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life and Ellie’s Cabin was everything I hoped for and more. The barn has a rustic vibe to it but yet is very luxurious and from the minute you walk in; you can tell that a lot of love and care has gone into creating this little gem. The finishing is meticulous and furnishing and bedding and furniture are too class. Loved waking up to the beautiful hills in background, lots of fresh air and sounds of birds chirping in the morning. I most definitely will be returning very soon.

Thank you so much for everything over the weekend – fantastic amenities provided by you both and everything was so lovely.  We’ll definitely be looking at coming back here again in the not too distant future!

Ellie’s cabin is the perfect getaway, we were greeted by the host who was extremely welcoming and provided us with a map of the local area along with top tips for where to eat, hike and what was on that weekend. Ellie’s cabin is so beautiful it’s also extremely clean and was made special by the personal touches, such as some bubbles on arrival, chocolate and fresh flowers! I would recommend anyone to stay here, escape the fast pace of life and relax whilst hearing the birds above and the views of the South Downs. Thank you again!

Fabulous little barn in the most amazing situation. So comfortable and with so many thoughtful welcoming touches. Lovely bed linen and soft towels. Beautiful view. Couldn’t fault it!

We had the most lovely stay at Ellie’s barn. It is gorgeous, clean and stylish and has everything you could need for a relaxing break. The barn itself is really spacious with a full size (and powerful) shower. The grounds are beautiful and the cabin is well placed for privacy. Jo, the host, is great and very accommodating which was much appreciated. We will definitely be recommending the barn to friends!!

Amazing cabin and lovely hosts, high quality of furnishings and equipped to the best standard. Absolutely beautiful surroundings, a true hidden gem. Lovely walks in area or just chilling on the terrace. Cannot praise enough and will be going to stay there again soon

Honestly so worth a stay! Absolutely 5 star. Josephine and Jim are such great hosts and the cabin itself is done to perfection. With such great quality self catering equipment in the cabin, and a few locally sourced food goods to ease your stay, it’s a dream! Would highly recommend.
